Perfect Songs: About Us
Perfect Songs is an independent music publishing company, well known both for discovering and nurturing new talent and for an impressive catalogue containing some of the most memorable songs of the past 25 years.
All-time classics in the Perfect Songs catalogue include Relax and Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood – two of the most notorious and talked-about pop hits of the eighties. Timeless ballads like the Grammy Award-winning Kiss From A Rose by Seal, Frankie's The Power of Love, and Dreams and Sunshine by Gabrielle. And Beatbox, Close (To The Edit) and Moments in Love by Art of Noise – some of the most sampled songs in history.
The company was formed in 1982 by record producer Trevor Horn and manager Jill Sinclair and it's been based at the same office – a wing of of the world-famous Sarm West recording studios - ever since. Horn's success as a record producer is undeniable but he is also the archetypal Perfect songwriter. His credits date back to Baby Blue, a 1979 co-write for Dusty Springfield, via hit songs of the 80s written for Malcolm McLaren and Grace Jones to co-writes in the 00s for Cher, Lisa Stansfield and several worldwide smash hit singles for tATu.
Perfect has a strong track record in signing new, fresh songwriters and working closely with them as they grow to write smash hit songs both for themselves and other artists. In recent years, Perfect has signed David Jordan (whose 2007 debut album, Set The Mood, has sold over 150,000 copies), acclaimed singer-songwriter Kid Harpoon, Alistair Griffin (one of the most enduring, credible talents to have been highlighted by UK reality TV), and Tim Hutton (whose recent co-writes include Ian Brown and Sugardaddy, a partnership with Tom Findlay from Groove Armada).
Two of Perfect's most enduring songwriters were both signed as almost complete unknowns, and have since collected an impressive line of Grammy nominations and awards. Seal - whose hits include Crazy, Kiss From A Rose, Killer and Future Love Paradise – is on a continual mission to redefine and refine the very nature of pop, soul and dance music and a fusion of all three. And Marsha Ambrosius, who signed to Perfect in the very early 00s, has her own singular vision which started with a blend of urban poetry and live spoken word as part of the duo Floetry and has since developed into massive hit songs written for and in collaboration with Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys. Most recently she's co-written Welcome To The Alesha Show, the lead track from Alesha Dixon's huge debut album.
As our catalogue section amply shows, Perfect's songwriters delivered some of the most memorable music of the 1980s. And this was equalled in the 1990s with the discovery of fresh talent that synonymous with the era: Seal, Gabrielle, Mark Morrison, rapper MC Tunes, rave act Shades of Rhythm and enduring techno pioneers 808 State.
“We're very proud that – in the face of an increasingly homogenised industry – Perfect Songs has retained a staunch independence,” said Trevor Horn on the company's 20th anniversary. “This has always enabled our signing policy to stay forward thinking.” A perfect song – like Perfect Songs - has creativity, integrity, and is built to last.
